After the closure of the village Post Office and grocery store, Matfield residents wished to avoid the inevitable long journeys for basic provisions to the nearest large town, so the community united to organise the funding, set up and running of their own community shop.

Historic moment for village shop
A traditional solution to a 21st century problem was celebrated as historian David Starkey opened Nailbourne Community Store in Barham in the heart of Kent. Local residents have got together to set up the village shop and post office to once again recapture a vital lifeline for the people of Barham, near Canterbury. The famous historian David Starkey was joined by Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration Kevin Lynes, Chair of Nailbourne Community Store Liz Minter, KCC local member Michael Northey and post mistress Alka Patel to celebrate the new co-operative business.
Official launch of the Kent Downs and Marshes Leader programme
Friday 23rd of January 2009 marked the official launch of the Kent Downs and Marshes Leader programme. The Kent Downs and Marshes Local Action Group, a partnership of private and pubic sector organisations, supported by Kent County Council, has successfully bid for over £2 million in funding. This money, from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) which is funded by Defra and the EU, has been provided to deliver a strategy to help rural businesses and communities, within the Kent Downs and Marshes area.
